INSTITUTIONS RESEARCH- MAGAZINE REGULATION

The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) is a regulator for all the newspapers and magazines in the UK. They keep all the newspapers and magazines to protect individual rights and to maintain high standards of journalism. Through this, they regulate and check to see if members are following the editor's code, which is a set of rules. The IPSO investigate complaints about online material as well as printed to make sure the Editor’s Code rule is not been broken which if they have the IPSO can make them publish the material again but with corrections. They also investigate serious standards failings, which they can fine up to £1 million if it is serious and systematic. They operate a 24- hour anti-harassment advice line and they provide advice for editors and journalists. Through training and guidance for journalists, they uphold the highest standards. Finally, they work alongside charities like NGOs and other organisations to support and improve the press standards. This Editor’s code is written by the 'Editor's Code Committee and is enforced by IPSO.

There are 17 rules the Editor’s Code consists of:
    1. Accuracy
    2. Privacy
    3. Harassment
    4. Intrusion into grief or shock
    5. Reporting Suicide
    6. Children
    7. Children in sex cases
    8. Hospitals
    9. Reporting of Crime
    10. Clandestine devices and subterfuge
    11. Victims of sexual assault
    12. Discrimination
    13. Financial journalism
    14. Confidential sources
    15. Witness payments in criminal trials
    16. Payments to criminals
    17. The Public Interest

Through my research I have found out that the IPSO and Editor’s Code was established on Monday 8th September 2014. The complaints that were received for the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) which had been the main industry regulator in the UK since 1990, were influenced and criticized to its lack of action in the News International phone hacking scandal, which included the Prime Minister David Cameron and other MPs who called for it to be replaced by a new system in July 2011.

These regulations would affect my magazine as it is aimed at students therefore the information provided would have to meet the needs and maintain throughout the Editor’s Code. I would need to make sure that content is accurate and suitable for the consumers as well as the images on the cover, contents page and double page. The information given to my target audience should not mislead them,my headlines should support my text. All my content must not discriminate or have any prejudicial references to an individual. As mentioned in my proposal, through the elements in my magazine the target audience are both males and females therefore any references should not discriminate against race, religion, sex, gender. The house style of my magazine would need to stay consistent to maintain
